The film's plot revolves around Donnie Berger, played by Sandler, a middle-aged alcoholic who was once in the public eye for a controversial teacher-student statutory rape case. He tries to reconnect with his son Todd Peterson/Han Solo Berger, played by Samberg, who was born as a result of that illicit relationship. Donnie hopes their reunion will air on television and make enough money to help him avoid going to jail for tax evasion.
